2 different perspectives for bullying

Hello, everyone.
Kensuke and I will give a presentation about "bullying in schools" in the end of this semester.

I'll show you 2 different perspective for bullying. I used some information from these website.

My name is Naoki Ogi. People in Japan call me Ogimama, and I like it! My job is to tell people how to educate children especially in an elementary and a junior high school. Also, I give people who have children some lectures about the importance of education in home. Recently, bullying mainly in schools is considered as one of the most serious problems in Japan.I think that making fun of others may become bullying. People who make fun of others don't notice the pain that victims have in their mind. We, including children, often watch some comedy programs on TV. Children will learn in those programs that it's no problem to make fun of others. As a result of that, children make fun of others without any consideration in schools, and that would cause bullying eventually.
I think there are some ways to stop bullying.
First, we should make a better school life, of the students, by the students, for the students. All the students should plan, make action, and participate in class and event such as school festival positively. Making a leader of students, and under him/her, all the students should cooperate with each other and  take action for stopping and excluding bullying.
Secondly, physical punishment and heavy penalty should be stopped. A research shows that students who had experienced the physical or mental pain like that tend to bully others because they feel stress and disgrace when they get those pain, and then they get angry and bully others from the mental pain.  This is why stopping physical punishment and heavy penalty is one of the ways to stop bullying.

Then, I'll show you one more perspective. This is a fictional one.

Hi! I'm a student in a university. Recently, a lot of news about bullying are broadcasted on TV. I think we cannot stop bullying because we have various emotion against other people or what they do. It's natural that we feel displeasure to the others if they do something annoying for us. As a result, we hate and bully them. If you want to stop and eliminate bullying,  all you have to do is to ask people not to have emotions. That's impossible, I think.
There are no specific solutions to stop bullying. Some children killed themselves because they were suffering from the bullying not only physically, but mentally. We could save them if we had had any solution for this problem. I hear there are some teachers in schools who missed the bullying though they noticed that. That's too bad, and unbelievable. I'll tell you a story about bullying that happened when I was in an elementary school. A girl, who had a light disability on brain, were bullied for 5 years. Every student in my class noticed that, but our teacher didn't, so some students told the fact to the teacher, but she didn't take any action. I guess that is what's going on in the present schools. We cannot solve this serious problem forever until we eliminate such bad teachers.

  1. I got a lot of opinion or idea about the perspective of Naoki Ogi. Most people in my class agreed with his(her?) idea that making fun of others will lead to bullying eventually, and we should make a better school life, of the student, by the student, for the student. He also thinks that making a leader of student to stop and eliminate bullying is good. However, there was an opposite idea that the leader may engage in bullying if they are given too much power in school. I didn't have an idea like that, so that opinion was so great. The other idea, one of my classmate had and I thought was good, was that Japanese government should take action for this serious problem because students cannot do many to stop bullying.

  2. I also got many opinions or ideas to the perspectives of a student at University. Most people in my class disagreed with his idea that we cannot stop bullying, because we can control our emotion to the other people and what they do. One of them said that we have to try to understand the feeling of others. There were also other idea that teachers have an important role in schools, and must engage in this problem and take action because students who are bullied lose the place to live in school if they ignored the existence of that. They also have to notice what's going on in their class. I gave an example of how bullying can continue on unnecessarily.

  3. I'm glad you introduced me to Naoki Ogi, since I had not heard his opinions on this issue before. He seems quite sensible. I agree with his criticism of irresponsible slapstick comedy programs on television that show people verbally, and often physically abusing others for laughs. Some manzai shows this kind of behavior, too.

Your classmates had a variety of opinions and came up with some interesting ideas. It takes creativity and sensitivity to solve such complicated and well-entrenched problems, such as bullying.

    Cheers,
    Joseph D.
